As a first research project of this kind, it conducts a comprehensive study into the issue of cycling infrastructure. The entire project emphasises availability of information as a significant element.  Foundation of an information portal focused on the research project shall strengthen the position of cycling within the entire transportation system.


Impact of changes in the world of labour on quality of life (MPSV 2005-2008)

The project is coordinated by the Research Institute for Occupational Safety, the Academy of Science of the Czech Republic Sociological institute is the co-recipient, and CUEC is the co-solver and is responsible for the research into the monetary valuation of the health risks in workplaces.


MATISSE: Methods and Tools for Integrated Sustainability Assessment (6th FP EU, 2005–2008).

Details of the project

Development of a concept framework and methodology for integrated sustainability assessment (e.g. cost-benefit assessment and material flow analysis). Methodology tested in case studies focused on water treatment, land use, raw material consumption, and dematerialisation.


VERHI-Children: Valuation of Environment-Related Health Impacts: Accounting for Differences Across Age, Latency and Risk Categories with a Particular Focus on Children (6th FP EU, 2006–2008).

Analysis of Everyday Travel Behaviour of Adult Urban Population and Instruments for Transport Regulation (OP MD, 2006–2008).

Analysis of everyday travel behaviour of adult urban population and factors affecting the choice of travel mode. Analysis of travel behaviour is the basis for discussion on possible tools and measures to regulate personal transport.


PASDEL: Practising Sustainable Development through E-Learning (EC, Leonardo da Vinci, 2006–2008).

A two-year pilot project increasing expert capacity in sustainable development by establishing a modern educational tool. E-learning modules made in four European languages cover SD in business, green architecture, transport, waste and Agenda 21).


INDI-LINK: Indicator-based Evaluation of Interlinkages between Different Sustainable Development Objectives (6th FP EU, 2006–2009).

Details of the project

Aimed at proposing and testing methods and instruments for assessment of relations among various aspects of sustainable development. Secondary objective is to contribute to development of selected indicators used by Eurostat in assessing EU sustainability.


URSUS: Socio-economic Metabolism of Urban Systems and its Impact on Ecosystems (NPV II MŠMT, , 2006–2011).

Details of the project

Aimed at assessing dependence of urban systems on surrounding environment and express the degree of impact on surrounding ecosystems and biodiversity by urban metabolism. Furthers the concept of socio-economic and urban metabolism and strives to express the relation between environmental burden and ecosystem services, including biodiversity maintenance.


Analysis of Distributional and Social Impacts in Sectoral Policies (NPV II MŠMT, 2006–2011).

Estimate of household behaviour and demand for energies, transport, drinking water, and organic food. Analysis of effects of regulation on working motivation. Ex-post and ex-ante measurement of tax progressivity and income inequality. Creation of application software toolboxes for analysis of distributional effects of tax changes for the Czech Republic.


VCSE: Virtual Campus for a Sustainable Europe (EC eLearning 2006, 2007–2009).

Details of the project

A virtual campus of five universities in various countries where e-learning courses are developed and applied jointly; the courses make use of team co-operation and case studies to understand sustainable development issues. Teaching modules are offered to other potential users among universities in European countries.


Modelling Impacts of Environmental Tax Reform: ETR Stage Two (VaV MŽP, 2007–2010).

Details of the project

Predicts impacts of ETR Stage Two in the Czech Republic. Co-operation on developing the CGE model and application of the E3ME econometric model, analysis of distributional effects, effects on energy consumption and externalities. Assessment of effectiveness of existing regulatory instruments in climate and air quality protection, and proposals for changed regulation.


EXIOPOL: A New Environmental Accounting Framework Using Externality Data and Input-Output Tools for Policy Analysis (6th FP, 2007–2010).

Details of the project

Co-ordinates quantification of external costs of waste treatment, industry, and odour. Analyses relation between economic performance and externalities of emissions by EKC testing for Central European countries. Valuation of health impacts for the purposes of quantification of externalities.


Monitoring and Assessment of Relations Between the Environment, Economy and Society by Means of Progress Reports (VaV MŽP, 2007–2011).

Details of the project

Main outcome is the annual Progress Report, serving communication of key trends of the Czech Republic Sustainable Development Strategy by means of sustainable development indicators. Concentrates on developing methodology of compiling selected indicators, particularly energy and material flow and biodiversity indicators.


TranExt: Quantification of External Costs of Transport in the Czech Republic (VaV MD, 2007–2011).

Details of the project

Quantification of external costs of transport caused by emissions, noise, congestion, and accidents. Valuation of benefits of changed noise levels, travel time value and accidents using non-market valuation methods.


Inventory of Greenhouse Gas Emissions in the Czech Republic (CHMI, annual)

Details of the project

The Center is involved in the national inventorying system, co-ordinated by the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute. It is responsible for annual inventorying of greenhouse gas emissions from the waste sector applying the IPCC methodology.
